Primary Program

Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.

– Anthony J. D’Angelo

Primary Class – Ages 3 to 6 years

Children ages three to six experience an academically enriched atmosphere within a strong social community.  Older students gain self-esteem by helping younger students, while the younger children learn from their older peers.  A strong drive to learn new things is developed through seeing the accomplishments of other children. The unique ability of children this age to absorb their environment , language and culture is aided by the combination of the social structure and the academics of the Montessori classroom.

Primary children learn through the use of manipulatives as well as through teacher guidance.  The teacher works with a child individually or in a small group, and then allows the child many repetitions with that activity to master its content in depth.  Children use the Montessori materials and engage in activities specifically designed for their learning in the areas of Practical Life, Sensorial Materials, Natural Science, Geography, History, Language Skills, Art, Music, and Spanish as well as Social, Emotional and Physical Development.

As children’s self control naturally develops, they enjoy an increasing degree of freedom in the classroom. Materials and activities are readily accessible to students; they enjoy freedom of movement and the ability to choose their own purposeful activity; and they are given the time to complete what they start.

Through the use of carefully prepared materials and activities, plus communication with teachers and interaction with peers, children grow in personal independence, concentration, self-motivation and a genuine love of learning.

Primary teachers are AMI certified (Association Montessori Internationale).  They have an in-depth relationship with each student enabling the child to reach his/her potential.  The teachers demonstrate respect, warmth, patience and understanding at all times.

Our class size is limited to 18 students, ranging from 3 years to 6 years old. During the progression from the first to the third year, a child transforms from a classroom observer and contributor to a classroom mentor and leader. Young children learn through their own activities and by witnessing the activities and lessons of the older children. Older students strengthen their abilities by mentoring and serving as role models in the classroom. The give and take of this relationship benefits the older student as well as the younger student. Students stay in the same Primary classroom from ages 3 to 6. The teacher and the students  develop a strong relationship with each other throughout this three year cycle.

Please visit our FAQ  section ( located in the About Montessori button)  to learn more about the benefits of the multi-age classroom and the three year cycle in the Primary classroom.

The benefits of Montessori are derived when the child completes the full three years.  Class time for Primary Half day children is from 8:45 to 12:00.  When the child reaches the age of five, he/ she generally begins attending the Full Day Primary Program.  The term full day refers to the more advanced academic work, which is available to the older and more independent children from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
